There's Nothing Like a New Toy ...

to divert one's attention!

Attended my first digital photography class on Tuesday and have had my head behind the lens all week.  We had homework.  You would NOT have wanted me to not do my first homework assignment ... would you?  I knew you wouldn't.

This week we learned to do this:

and this:

There's one more thing, but I haven't done that yet.

Even if it takes me a while to get comfortable with all the things one can do manually, there is always automatic on which I can fall back.  (Ms. Eula Snelson would be proud of that sentence!)  But these are all manual.

See the bee? dead center ...

There's not much happening in the garden right now.  We're in that hot and dry phase between effusive early summer and the rebound of early fall.  Thank goodness for the cutting garden and the planters!  Everything has its role.

Happily, I'm feeling anything but hot and dry right now.  Mind engaged and looking forward to the coming Tuesday to see what new things I can learn.  Oh, and I still need to do that last homework exercise....

  1. Gorgeous. My husband was going to buy himself a new camera for his retirement gift later this year, but is talking himself out of it. I think I will buy him one for a gift. What a great hobby.

My garden is puttering out too and the purple martins are gathering to head down your way. I wouldn't be surprised if they were gone by the end of the week.

    1. Mitchell gave the the whole enchilada of cameras. It's a Nikon 3200 digital. Came with bag, tripod, two lenses, and a whole bunch of other little things. He got it as a package, but I do not know where... or what it cost. He tends to spend too much - well, at least more than i would spend!

      Hope to see your martins!

    2. Actually, now that I think about it ... we have a mini-festival for the martins. Apparently the congregate (ok, for birds we call it flock) under a downtown bridge and all the nearby bars sell purple drinks in celebration. We've never gone, but maybe i need to talk a few photos this year ...

  2. Always cool to be learning new things. Looks like you have great subjects in your garden to practice. Do I hear talk of fall over your way? No please …., not yet. The quality of light is changing from "white hot" to "subdued warm", but it is still August and (green and somewhat moist) summer here.

    1. Still plenty of summer left here and I fear we will have a hot September after this cool August. Normally don't start to cool down until mid to late Sept. But the light is changing a bit. Lots of rain today, so will have more blooms soon.

  4. I'm so proud of you! Those pictures are just gorgeous!! I feel like it takes a lot of time and courage to move that button off of automatic. But man, is it worth it!! I can't wait to see what else you learn. And what you can teach me when next we visit (I have an English teacher who would be pretty stinkin proud of that sentence, too!). :)
