Wednesday Workday

The work this week was a much overdue, much needed painting of the posts on the front porch.  Mitchell had cleaned and sanded them, but he is either the worst painter on the planet or the smartest husband ... 'cause he sure has me believing that he should never touch a paint brush.

You don't really want to look at newly painted posts, so how about a few fall blossoms instead?  Good choice!
A reblooming azalea.  There are three of them, but this is the only one that chose to bloom this fall.
And a spectacular sasanqua.  Odd ... they appear to be the same color.

  1. Mm, what is a sasanqua? I don't think I have ever seen that before. Is a camelia relative?

Lovely azalea. I wonder if plants get sometimes tricked into blooming by the change in light levels.

    1. You hit it on the head. Sasanqua is a kind of camellia. It is fall blooming, with a somewhat smaller and less complex bloom. We are so lucky here - they grow very well in our acid soil and we are on the line for cold in the winter. most do not like much wind, so I am lucky that this one does not seem to mind at all. (My tennis team sent it when Mother died and I just love it that it blooms annually in "memorial".) The Norfolk area which is 100 miles east of us and on the coast has camellias and sasanquas blooming like weeds from October thru May. People even use them as hedges there!

  2. I agree. I've never heard of a sasanqua. Although, you will be so proud...my hosta came back to life. Y'know, we moved it from VA in the front seat of the Pathfinder. And it had kind of died off under the summer heat and sun and being on the east-facing side. But Blue messed around with it..dug around in the dirt and pulled up a bunch of dead pieces and it's completely and totally back and looking great. So maybe we'll get a sasanqua next.

    1. You could probably grow sasanqua there - see above - i think you're zone 7B as well.

Hosta's are great and should love your conditions there and should love Blue. Anyone who cares enough to carry a plant in the car deserves success!
